What Is Passenger Car Tyre
Passenger car tyres are for vehicles that are designed for personal use – like hatchbacks, sedans, coupes, and crossovers. Many suvs, minivans, and smaller pickup trucks (under ¾ ton) also use passenger-rated tires. As the name indicates, passenger car tyres are designed for standard passenger vehicles, including lighter trucks and suvs. These tires ensure a smoother ride and exceptional traction in wet and dry conditions, all while providing adequate load carrying capacity for lightweight vehicles.
Advantages of Passenger Car Tyre
Better braking ability
Passenger car tyres let your vehicle stop faster, protecting you, your passengers, and other people on the road from accidents. This tyre's wider contact patch and pliable rubber give you shorter braking distances. Passenger car tyres also tend to be compatible with anti-lock braking systems, which keep the wheels from locking up during sudden braking, helping you steer to safety.
Excellent steering response
With crisp and precise steering, you feel you're in total control of your drive. Passenger car tyres give you impeccable steering response even in wet conditions, helping you avoid mishaps. Also boosting your safety are this tyre's ability to navigate tight corners and its excellent handling.
Less chance of overheating
These tyres can handle the heat that goes with tyre exertion. When your tyre overheats, blowouts are possible, which may result in fatal accidents. But because of their cutting-edge internal construction and materials, passenger car tyres have strong heat-dissipating abilities, keeping you and your loved ones safe during those hot summer days.
Boosted driving pleasure
All the above benefits combine to give you an enhanced driving experience. Passenger car tyres let you realise that the journey is indeed the destination. The adventure begins as soon as you rev up your engine and hit the road, feeling the smooth interaction between you and your car. For performance-seekers, driving is a way to enjoy life to its fullest.
A Passenger Car Tyre Components
Tread
Made from synthetic and natural rubber, it's comprised of three sections: the "cap", which is responsible for gripping the road and providing directional stability and wear-and-tear resistance, the "base" which reduces rolling resistance and damage to the casing and the "shoulder" which forms an optimal transition from the tread to the sidewall.
Jointless cap plies
Found just underneath the outer layer of the tyre, this nylon cord, embedded in rubber, enhances high-speed suitability.
Steel-cord for belt plies
High-strength steel cords that enhance shape retention and directional stability. As well as reducing the rolling resistance they help to increase the tyre's mileage performance.
Textile cord ply
Rayon or rubberized polyester controls the internal pressure and maintain's the tyre's shape. The inner liner, made from butyl rubber, seals the air-filled inner chamber and acts as a tube in tubeless tyres. The side wall protects the casing from external damage and atmospheric conditions. Information about the tyre can also be found on the side wall. Bead reinforcement, made from nylon and aramid fibres, enhance directional stability and ensure steering precision.
Bead apex
This synthetic, rubber material also enhances directional stability and steering precision while improving comfort.
Bead core
This steel wire, embedded in rubber, ensures that the tyre sits firmly on its rim.
First of all, it is important to know that rubber compounds vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. These compounds vary between the different passenger car tyre sizes and types and always depend on the preferred driving characteristics. Passenger car tyre material consists of the following elements, in varying quantities depending on use:
Rubber
Natural and synthetic rubber (also known as polymer) are the main components of a car passenger car tyre. Depending on the variety, these materials provide a high level of slip resistance and, after processing, the preferred elasticity. Apart from that, rubber has the disadvantage that it wears out quickly and can harden at low temperatures or become soft at high temperatures. Natural rubber is harvested from rubber trees on large plantations. In the process, the bark of the tree is cut and the milky sap is collected. You might know the milky sap as latex. In contrast, synthetic rubber offers the advantage that its properties can be modified. As the manufacturer, when selecting materials we can ensure that your passenger car tyres will get you safely through any weather.
Fillers
In general, fillers are added to the rubber. These fillers can be carbon black, silica, carbon or chalk. They bind the rubber and make it more resistant to wear, as rubber on its own can crumble, particularly as a result of breaking. We use fillers to counter this effect and increase the mileage of your passenger car tyres. However, this can harden the rubber compound a little. Fillers are also the reason for the colour of passenger car tyres. Carbon black was the first filler to be used and gave the passenger car tyres their colour. However, coloured passenger car tyres never made their breakthrough, even when other fillers and therefore other colours came into play later on. That is why passenger car tyres are still black to this day. In contrast to the early days, we use silica in the compound for modern passenger car tyre manufacturing. Silica is the name given to silicic acid salt. This substance binds the rubber particularly well with the sulphur, which is essential for the vulcanisation of the passenger car tyres later on. During this process, the passenger car tyre material is heated to combine the chemical bonds of the individual substances to create elastic rubber. This allows us to provide good mileage without having to sacrifice other properties.
Plasticiser
Plasticisers are needed to ensure that the passenger car tyre gives you a positive and safe feeling while driving, even in snow and rain. These oils and resins make the passenger car tyre flexible and improve the grip of the material. For you, the driver, this means that plasticisers improve rolling resistance. Oils also add to the slip resistance of the passenger car tyre. That's why more oils are used in winter passenger car tyres than in summer passenger car tyres; plasticisers prevent the rubber from hardening at low temperatures.
Making the Right Passenger Car Tyre Choice
Find out if you need new passenger car tyres: Driving with worn passenger car tyres can be dangerous for you, your passengers and other road users. The following are guides for the minimum passenger car tyre tread depth required in different environments. Passenger car tyres are considered to be unroadworthy below 1.6mm tread depth. In wet conditions 3mm or less tread means a significant loss of wet traction due to shallower grooves and channels. In snow conditions, traction noticeably diminishes at 4.75mm. Shallower lug and groove depths limit a passenger car tyre's ability to "bite" into the snow and clean out snow compressed in the tread. Irregular wear necessitates early passenger car tyre replacement.
Determine how many passenger car tyres you need: Make sure you're checking your passenger car tyre wear so you can judge whether to replace them all at once or in pairs. If you make the choice to replace your passenger car tyres in pairs, it may also be worth performing a passenger car tyre rotation at the same time to avoid alignment problems. If you're putting two new passenger car tyres on, it's best to fit them to the rear so that you drive to the condition of your passenger car tyres. Of course, if the car is rear-wheel drive, this suggestion is reversed – you should instead fit them on the front.
Determine the passenger car tyre size: Most people replace their old passenger car tyres with the same size that was on the vehicle when it was first released. This is typically a valid choice, but if you're uncertain you can always check your owner's manual, passenger car tyre placard (check your door or glovebox) or the passenger car tyre itself for more details. If you're still not sure of your passenger car tyre size, you can use our passenger car tyre finder tool to see what's available, or visit one of our locations for further assistance. You can also change your ride and performance by changing passenger car tyre size. Get in touch and our friendly team can tell you if there's another size available for your car, as well as what changes to performance you can expect. We'll also ensure your new passenger car tyre choice stays within federal and state regulations. Changes you may notice should you change your passenger car tyre size include: By selecting a passenger car tyre with the next lowest profile, you can significantly improve the handling of your vehicle. On small cars, a good example is to replace the original equipment 155/80r-13 size with 175/70r-13. The tread is almost an inch wider and the passenger car tyre has a proportionately lower sidewall, however the passenger car tyre's height remains the same. By choosing to plus size your passenger car tyres, you'll find yourself with a passenger car tyre that has the same height as your original passenger car tyre, but with a shorter sidewall. This change delivers improvement in passenger car tyre response and handling. Upsizing is also another option that is typically common for 4wd and truck owners. By choosing this option, you'll get a taller, wider passenger car tyre that improves performance and ride quality. On trucks, larger passenger car tyres can improve traction, load carrying capacity and appearance.
Analyse your driving habits: It can help you make the best choice for your passenger car tyres based on the conditions in your city or town (or state/region, should you drive long distances). For example, a person living in cairns will typically make different passenger car tyre choices compared to a driver living in melbourne. If you're keen to make the choice yourself, the aspects you should consider include: Do you drive on dry roads most of the year, mixed wet and dry, or mostly wet?
Buy the best quality you can afford:There are a few ways to calculate the longevity and value of your passenger car tyres, getting you the best roi. These include: Calculate the total price for your passenger car tyre purchase and divide that by the kilometres of service. This will give you the cost per kilometre. You'll quickly see that the better passenger car tyres are better value after all. When comparing passenger car tyres within one brand, use the utqg ratings (tread wear) to calculate value. Divide the tread wear rating by the price – the highest number should be your pick if you want the best value by wear. This system won't help you compare between brands, however, because there is no standardisation for tread wear ratings. If you do want to compare between brands, reviewing traction and temperature ratings are the best way to make your choice, as these measurements are standardised.
Consider performance and speed ratings: You should always buy a passenger car tyre with the appropriate speed rating for your vehicle. If you don't, be aware that you're limiting your vehicle's performance.
Consider passenger car tyre type: Each year, more and more car and light truck/4wd/suv designs are introduced.
Passenger Car Tyre Care & Maintenance Guide
Proper inflation
Maintaining proper air pressure is the single most important thing drivers can do for their passenger car tyres. In the space of just one month, a passenger car tyre can lose two pounds of air pressure. It is important to check the air pressure of your passenger car tyres regularly to make sure your passenger car tyres are neither under- nor overinflated. Underinflation is the worst enemy your passenger car tyre can have. It causes increased treadwear on the outside edges (or shoulders) of the passenger car tyre. It also generates excessive heat, which can reduce passenger car tyre life. Finally, it reduces your fuel economy by increasing rolling resistance - soft passenger car tyres make your vehicle work harder.
Balance and alignment
Having your passenger car tyres balanced and your vehicle properly aligned is important not only to the longevity of the passenger car tyre but also to the safety of the driver and to the performance of the car. Unbalanced passenger car tyres cause road vibration, which can lead to driver fatigue, premature passenger car tyre wear (also known as cupping or dipping) and unnecessary wear to your vehicle's suspension. Passenger car tyres should be balanced when they are mounted on wheels for the first time or when they are remounted after a repair. They should be rebalanced at the first sign of a vibration or shimmy and should be balanced at least once a year, regardless.
Regular rotation
The weight of a vehicle is not evenly distributed to all four passenger car tyres. Therefore, regular rotation is necessary to maintain even treadwear and get the most out of your passenger car tyres. There are several methods of rotation. For all-season passenger car tyres and most vehicles on the road, passenger car tyres from the rear axle are moved to the drive axle and crossed to opposite sides of the vehicle. The passenger car tyres from the drive axle are moved to the rear but remain on the same sides. This is known as the "modified x" pattern.
Visual inspection
Giving your passenger car tyres a good visual once-over can help you discover punctures or other visible signs of damage that may make replacement necessary. The next time you check the air pressure of your passenger car tyres, scan the treads for any sharp objects that may have punctured your passenger car tyres. Even if the puncture is not deep enough to flatten the passenger car tyre immediately, the cracking and pitting caused by smaller punctures can eventually worsen and lead to problems down the road. Check the wear patterns on your treads as well. Excessive shoulder wear can indicate underinflation, while wear to the centre of the tread can mean overinflation.
Repairs
It is crucial to know when it is okay to have a passenger car tyre repaired and when a passenger car tyre should be replaced. If a passenger car tyre loses its air pressure, it must be removed from the wheel for a complete internal inspection to be sure it is not damaged. Passenger car tyres that are run even a short distance while flat are often damaged beyond repair. Most punctures, nail holes or cuts up to 1/4 inch can be repaired by trained technicians as long as the damage is confined to the tread. Do not repair any sidewall puncture or passenger car tyres with tread punctures larger than 1/4 inch. Also, never repair passenger car tyres which are worn below 1/16 inch of tread depth. Most passenger car tyre repairs should be handled by trained professionals. Be sure that your spare passenger car tyre is inflated to the proper pressure and properly maintained.
